A Letter to My Niece is a series where I reflect on my journey through womanhood, including its challenges, joys, and milestones. I explore themes of self-discovery, well-being, relationships, menstrual cycle, and resilience. Through these letters, I aim hoping to inspire and connect with others.

Dear Ella,

My love, according to the law, you’re officially an adult now! This is just the first of many milestones you’ll hit on your journey through life. At 18, I felt the world was full of endless possibilities, and the pressure to make the “right” choices. I was trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. It was a time full of both highs and lows. And looking back, I realize it was one of those pivotal moments that shaped everything that came after.

I imagine you might be feeling many of the same things. As your aunt, I hope to be there for you, sharing experiences that can help you navigate your path with wisdom and confidence. I want to share the lessons I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) and guide you in trusting your instincts, following your heart, and knowing when to lean on others for support. Life will have its ups and downs, but know you never have to face them alone.

As you mature, you’ll learn about your mind and body, your menstrual cycle and how to embrace the many changes you will face as a woman. You’ll learn to honor your body’s rhythms, recognize when it’s time to rest, reflect, or push forward. Taking care of your mental well-being involves finding balance, building resilience, and seeking calm in chaos.

As you fall in love and navigate the complexities of relationships, remember that your heart, though strong, may sometimes break.

Each experience, though painful, will shape you into a woman who knows how to heal, grow, and love again. Along the way, take the time to appreciate your beauty, inside and out. Engage in self-care practices that nurture both your body and soul. Embrace these experiences with grace, knowing they will deepen your understanding of yourself and the beautiful woman you are and will continue to become.

My Ella, as women, we often face so much pressure from society, often without even realizing it. But I believe we can choose a different path—one that focuses on our health, happiness, and well-being. My own journey has made me stronger, deepening my intuition and self-love. And it’s still a work in progress.

Turning 40 was a milestone in my journey through womanhood. It forced me to evaluate my life and make course corrections. This new chapter has been both exciting and humbling. As a younger woman, there were times I felt like I was just getting by. Now, I am confident that the mental fortitude I’ve gained allows me to handle whatever life presents. At your age, forty seemed old, but now it feels like I have my whole life ahead of me.

Where it took me decades to hit my stride, you don’t need to wait until you’re my age. Trust what feels right for your body. I’m now making choices based on what resonates with me, rather than following the “norm”. I’ve become a better listener, especially to my own body. And I see you already doing listening to your own body. You’ve shared how you don’t stick to the conventional three meals a day but eat when you’re hungry. In many ways, you’ve been my teacher too.

I’m here for you, always—cheering you on and excited to be a part of the moments to come.

With all my love,

Your Titi ❤️
